What Makes a Ball Valve "Excavator-Style"?
Standard hydraulic ball valves use a lever handle that sits perpendicular to the body when closed and parallel when open. That works fine on a manifold or test stand, but it's a liability when the valve is mounted to a moving boom or stick: branches, debris, and the operator's own attachments can catch the handle and either snap it off or accidentally actuate the valve mid-cycle.
Excavator-style ball valves solve this with three design changes:
- No handle. A short, low-profile hex stem replaces the handle. The valve is actuated with a wrench or socket, so it can't snag.
- Detented stop washer. A spring-loaded detent engages the stop washer at the 0° and 90° positions — open or closed on 2-way valves, either flow position on 3-way diverters — preventing accidental actuation.
- Integral mounting holes. Standard mounting holes on the valve body let you bolt the valve directly to a bracket, weld plate, or machine surface. Optional weld plates (sold separately) make permanent installation straightforward.
The result is a valve that can live on a boom for years without maintenance and won't accidentally dump your thumb circuit when a tree branch brushes against it.
2-Way vs. 3-Way: Which Do You Need?
2-way ball valves (shutoff) have two ports and a single flow path. The ball either lets fluid through or blocks it — that's it. Use a 2-way when you need to:
- Isolate a hydraulic thumb so it stays locked while you run other attachments
- Shut off an auxiliary line for maintenance without bleeding the whole system
- Add a manual shutoff to a circuit that doesn't have one
- Bypass a damaged or removed cylinder
3-way ball valves (diverter) have three ports and an L-port flow pattern. Rotating the ball routes flow from a common inlet to one of two outlets. Use a 3-way when you need to:
- Switch one auxiliary circuit between two attachments (e.g., thumb vs. grapple, breaker vs. shear)
- Direct return flow either back to tank or to a secondary load
- Combine isolation and diversion in a single valve to save space and fittings
If you're plumbing a third-function kit on a mini excavator or skid steer and the operator switches between attachments without stopping to change couplers, you almost certainly want a 3-way.
Thread Types: NPT, SAE, and ORB Explained
This is where most installation problems start. The thread types you'll see on excavator ball valves are not interchangeable.
NPT (National Pipe Tapered) is a tapered thread that seals on thread engagement, using PTFE tape or pipe dope as a backup sealant. It's the most common thread type in general hydraulics and the least expensive, but the sealing mechanism (thread deformation) makes it less ideal for high-pressure, high-vibration applications. You also can't disassemble and reassemble an NPT joint indefinitely — each cycle damages the threads slightly.
SAE / ORB (O-Ring Boss) is a straight thread that seals via an O-ring at the base of the male fitting. It's the preferred connection for medium- and high-pressure hydraulics because the O-ring provides a reliable, vibration-resistant seal that can be disassembled and reassembled many times without degradation. If you see a port labeled "#8 SAE" or "ORB-8", that's a 1/2" O-ring boss connection.
Rule of thumb: If your machine runs at or above 3,000 PSI working pressure, or if vibration is a concern (i.e., it's on an excavator), specify SAE/ORB ports. NPT is fine for lower-pressure auxiliary work and is often cheaper, but plan to use thread sealant and accept that re-torque cycles will eventually require replacement.
Port Sizing & Flow Capacity
Match your valve port size to the line size of your hydraulic system, not your pump's max output. Oversizing a valve adds cost and weight; undersizing creates a restriction that heats your oil and starves attachments.

For most mini excavator auxiliary work, 3/8" or 1/2" is the sweet spot. Full-size excavators with high-flow auxiliary circuits often need 3/4" or 1".
Pressure Ratings: 5,075 PSI vs. 7,250 PSI
You'll see two pressure ratings on excavator-style valves: 7,250 PSI — every 2-way valve (AV2 and GV2, full-bore and reduced-bore alike) plus the Gemels GV3 3-way in the 3/8" and 1/2" sizes — and 5,075 PSI — all Anchor AV3 sizes and Gemels GV3 3-ways 3/4" and larger.
The lower rating tracks the 3-way function and larger sizes: a 3-way ball has more material removed for the third port path, which reduces wall thickness. Reduced-bore ('R') valves carry the same pressure rating as their full-bore siblings — what they trade flow capacity for is a more compact, lighter package (1-1/4" ports on the smaller 1" valve body).
For most excavator auxiliary circuits running 3,000–4,500 PSI working pressure, either rating is adequate. If you're feeding a high-pressure circuit, spec the 7,250 PSI valve. Note: none of these valves are rated for continuous hammer/breaker impulse service — the high-frequency spikes and fatigue cycles a breaker produces call for a dedicated impulse-rated valve.
Mounting Options
All Anchor AV2/AV3 and Gemels GV2/GV3 valves come with integral mounting holes. You have three install options:
- Direct bolt-mount to a machine surface or bracket using the integral holes. Simplest installation; requires drilling and tapping (or pre-machined holes) on the host structure.
- Optional weld plate (Anchor WP-AV series, sold separately — part numbers are in the AV2/AV3 datasheets linked on each valve product page). The valve bolts to the plate, the plate welds to the boom or stick. Distributes load over a larger area and lets you weld without disassembling the valve. Gemels GV2/GV3 valves mount via their integral metric tapped holes.
- In-line mount with no rigid attachment, supported only by the hose connections. Acceptable for light-duty auxiliary work but not recommended on excavator booms — vibration will eventually fatigue the hoses.
For boom-mounted installs, always go with the weld plate option.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why don't excavator ball valves have handles?
Handles are a snag hazard on moving equipment. A branch or piece of debris can catch a lever and either break it off or unintentionally rotate the valve. The hex stem design requires a deliberate wrench action to actuate, which protects against accidental operation.
Can I substitute NPT for SAE on the same port?
No. NPT and SAE are different thread profiles and seal mechanisms — they will not mate, and forcing an NPT fitting into an SAE port (or vice versa) will damage both. Match the fitting thread to the valve port exactly.
What size valve do I need for a 1/2" hydraulic line?
A 1/2" port valve (#8 SAE or 1/2" NPT) is the direct match. Stepping up to 3/4" reduces restriction but costs more; stepping down to 3/8" will choke flow and heat the oil.
Are these valves rated for hydraulic breaker (hammer) circuits?
Not for continuous impulse service. Hydraulic hammers create high-frequency pressure spikes and millions of fatigue cycles that a static pressure rating does not cover. Use a dedicated impulse-rated valve in any line that sees breaker pulses. The Anchor and Gemels excavator-style valves are appropriate for upstream isolation or for non-impulse auxiliary functions.
Do the weld plates come with the valve?
